How to Choose the Right Speed Bump for Your Parking Lot

Step 1: Speed Bump vs Speed Hump — Not the Same Thing

Concrete
- Pros: Zero maintenance, lasts 20+ years
- Cons: Permanent — you can never move it. Expensive to install ($150-300/m poured), damages vehicles harder than rubber, illegal in many private jurisdictions where you don't own the road surface
- Best for: Public roads, permanent infrastructure only
Step 3: Get the Size Right
Standard modular units are 500 mm long (in the driving direction that vehicles cross). Chain multiple units to span your lane width:

Check that your supplier ships the correct bolts (M12 × 100 mm expansion bolts for asphalt; M12 × 150 mm chemical anchors for concrete). Ask specifically — many suppliers ship the hump without bolts, then you're stuck sourcing them locally.
Step 5: Reflective vs Non-Reflective
The yellow stripes on rubber humps come in three grades:
- Painted stripes — cheapest, fade in 12 months
- Glass-bead reflective — good for headlight visibility, lasts 3-5 years, small price bump
- HIP prismatic reflective — brightest, lasts 8+ years, best for outdoor 24/7 use
For any outdoor installation where night traffic exists, glass-bead is the minimum you should accept.
