The physics: a truck backs at 2-3 mph, weighing ~40,000 kg. Kinetic energy at impact ≈ 15-30 kJ. Concrete cracks at roughly 5-8 kJ per contact point. Without a bumper, your dock face fails after 200-400 impacts.
The Three Bumper Grades
Grade 1: Standard Molded Rubber
- Solid vulcanized rubber block, typically 10 × 24 × 4-6 inches
- Cost: $30-80 per bumper
- Lifespan: 3-5 years (2,000-4,000 impacts)
- Best for: light-traffic docks (fewer than 5 trucks/day), warm climates
Grade 2: Laminated Rubber
Multiple layers of pre-cured rubber pads sandwiched between steel end plates, cross-bolted together. Layered construction absorbs impact by inter-layer flex — much more energy absorption than solid rubber.

- Best for: mid-to-heavy traffic docks, most freight terminals
Grade 3: Steel-Faced Laminated
Same laminated rubber core, but with a hardened steel (mild or stainless) impact face plate on the vehicle side. The steel spreads point-load and eliminates scraping wear from trailer skids and dock levellers.
- Cost: $150-350 per bumper
- Lifespan: 15-20+ years (30,000+ impacts)
- Best for: cold-storage docks (rubber goes brittle below 0°C), high-volume freight (10+ trucks/day), any dock with a leveller that scrapes
Sizing — Get the Thickness Right
Bumper thickness (projection from the concrete face) is the single most important dimension. Too thin and the truck hits concrete; too thick and it interferes with dock levellers.

Mounting Details That Matter
Bumpers are held by 2-6 through-bolts into concrete. Two critical spec items:
- Grade 8 hardware or better — Grade 5 bolts shear under repeated impact loads
- Chemical anchors, not expansion sleeves — expansion anchors work loose over 2-3 years of vibration. Chemical (epoxy) anchors last as long as the concrete
Also ask if your supplier ships the bolts and washers. Many don't — you'll waste a week sourcing Grade 8 M20 hardware locally.
